Taiwanese American Heritage Week Celebration
May 10-18, 2003
The 2003 Taiwanese American Heritage Week (TAHW)
celebration will be held from May 10 to 18,
2003. The theme of the 2003 TAHW is Traditional Taiwanese Ceremony
& Festival. The purpose of this celebration is to embrace Taiwanese
cultural heritage in the greater San Diego community.
In 1992, the U.S. President Bush officially signed
Act HR 5572 put forward by Congressmen Frank Horton and Norman Mineta.
The Public Law designated May of each year as Asian Pacific American
Heritage Month to celebrate and to praise the contribution made
by the Asian Pacific Americans to the United States. In 1999, the
U.S. Congress specifically designated a week in the Asian Pacific
American Heritage Month in May as Taiwanese American Heritage Week.
Both in May 1999 and in May 2000, then President Clinton had sent
letters to thank the Taiwanese Americans for the contribution to
the society and to congratulate the celebration of the Taiwanese
American Heritage Week.
With the dedication of all Taiwanese American organizations
in San Diego, 2003 TAHW will feature various festivities. These
include a "Taste of Taiwan" food court, a culture and
history seminar on "The Mazu Worship and Related Festivals,"
a karaoke night, a chamber music performance, and so on. The Taiwanese
American Foundation of San Diego and Taiwanese American Community
Center sincerely invite everybody to participate in this cultural
celebration.
